Clever Monkeys: a visual guide to atheism
My final project called Clever Monkeys* is all about designing a visual language for atheism. Since the number of atheists is growing more and more in the Western world it deserves to have an image. I grew up in an atheist family but in a very religious country. As I never had a religion I decided to design one which will answer the need of modern society where traditional, ancient religions lost their purpose. I noticed non-believers have quite a bad name and reputation of people without morals or values and as atheism has no visual language, no image, it remains a blank page. I decided to give it a try and fill up that gap. In my work I am trying to capture the constant evolution and movement of human, science and nature. As a contradiction to religion atheism is always evolving, questioning everything around and looking for new answers and solutions. I decided to use chalkboards as the main medium. The wiping off, drawing over, erasing represents the constant evolution and how science has to argue with religious doctrines.
*The title Clever Monkeys comes from the battle between creationists and evolutionists about sharing a common ancestor with apes.
